When a person is trying to lose weight or on a diabetic diet, advanced planning is always beneficial to the person who is trying to eat in a healthy way.

Going to a potluck or barbeque? Meeting friends for dinner at the buffet or all you can eat joint? These gatherings are disasters ready to happen if you don’t go prepared to protect your blood sugar and weight.

Think to yourself, “this event is not going to get the best of me and I am going to enjoy my time with my friends, not my time with my fork and my plate.”

If you are going to dish yourself your plate, fill it up with low-carb vegetables like spinach, broccoli, or squash and three ounces of meat.

Plan on forsaking the mac and cheese or cheesecake; eating them now and regretting later is always the foolish choice.

No person will ever get angry at themselves for not spending time with their fork or plate, however, they will regret not spending time with their loved one. Time is precious, spend more time with friends and put the fork down.

Remember, buffets are perfect for throwing your sugar levels through the roof and gaining unwanted extra pounds.

Exercise is an essential part of diabetes management and weight loss. Walking burns calories, which attributes to weight loss.

Walking is beneficial to most diabetics by helping to regulate blood glucose levels at a more efficient rate.

People average 5,000 steps a day. When a person is using a pedometer, first, they are mindful of walking and walk more.

Secondly, pedometers prompt people to set goals, such as 10,000 steps a day. 10,000 steps is the accepted norm that people should be walking a day for better health.  It has been established that when people walk 10,000 steps a day, there is a lower death rate.

If a person averages around 2,000 steps a day, then, it might be a good idea to slowly build up to their goal of steps. A good example would be to add 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day for while, depending on how they feel about it, and then add more steps.

It is always important to check with your doctor before you start any exercise routing.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Beef, Diabetes and Weight Loss

Both fish and beef may be fatty, however, fish is a heart healthy choice due to fish  having some very beneficial qualities to help with obesity and diabetes.

  • Fish fat has incredibly beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids can aid in reducing cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • The reduction of inflammation and the prevention of cancer are both aided by fish oil.
  • The secretion of leptin is stimulated when omega-3’s are consumed, which helps the body respond to insulin and reduces the risk of becoming obese.
  • The fattiest of fish has less calories per ounce than beef.

SalmonPrime rib is 600 calories compared to salmon, which is 400 calories.

Sirloin is 450 calories compared to tuna steak, which is 275 calories.

Choose fish over beef and possibly save yourself 4-18 pounds a year making the smart choice.

Butter is saturated, artery clogging fat. Olive and nut oils are monounsaturated fats, health promoting fats. If you dip your whole grain bread lightly in premeasured oil, instead of spreading on the butter, you cut calories and promote good health.

Following this good and healthy alternative can possibly save you a tablespoon a day and in a year, you could lose 12 pounds.

Food Pushers, Diabetics and Weight Loss

This was a star, and it is what I will do to your dreams...Weight loss and diabetic tip for today:

Well-meaning food pushers are a hazard to weight loss and diabetics. Food pushers are everywhere, they are at home, at work, at church. They are just trying to make you happy. They are not thinking of the glucose raising, weight increasing consequences.

A person can be happy without endangering their blood sugar or gaining weight. Our job is to say a well-positioned “NO” in a nice, polite, yet firm way. If we show the slightest apprehension, then they think they have us eating their confection!

We could say, “This is delicious,” after trying it. Then say, “I’d love to have more, but I ate a big breakfast of oatmeal and I’m stuffed.” We could also say, “I can’t take another bite, I ate a snack just a few minutes ago.

My husband would say, “No thanks, I am trying to quit.” Doesn’t matter what it is, he says it to everything.

If you say you are on a “diet,” the pusher will get the signal that you want the sugar raising morsel and try harder to push it on you.

Resist the food pusher’s 500 calorie treat once a week and you can lose 7-10 pounds in a year.

Remember, DON’T LET THE FOOD PUSHER GET YOU!!!

Exercise, Diabetes and Weightloss

Everyone knows exercise builds muscle to help burn fat at a better rate for increased weight loss, however, exercise helps diabetics too.

With diabetics, their bodies capacity to utilize insulin to allow glucose into cells, like muscles and the liver is compromised.  When a person exercises, the muscles take in more glucose at a much higher rate, thus lowering blood glucose levels.  Interestingly, at the same time the glucose is being absorbed, the insulin levels are being lowered so the person doesn’t end up with hypoglycemia.  The body is an amazing machine!

The bottom line, exercise helps diabetics.  So get out their and move your body!  Run, swim, ride a horse, play with your kids, go hiking or join a gym.

Do what ever it takes to get your body moving (with your doctors approval).
